Abilene Office Priorities & Community Involvement

The Abilene office of Legal Aid of NorthWest Texas provides a wide range of limited and extended civil legal services. We have a significant family law practice, with special emphasis on victims of crime and domestic violence and maintain strong working relationships with area shelters.

Abilene is home to the Dyess Air Force Base and has a growing veteran population. Our office works with the Taylor County Veterans’ Service Office, the Veterans Affairs, and the West Central Texas Regional Foundation to connect with and serve local veterans. To meet the legal needs of senior citizens, our Equal Justice Volunteer Program (EJVP) program focuses on wills and estate planning clinics.

Removal of barriers to employment and housing is a growing segment of our practice. We partner with the Texas Fair Defense Project and the Big Country Reentry Coalition to assist clients with obtaining and renewing driver’s licenses and determining whether they have any stale or incorrect entries on their criminal records that may be eligible for expunction or nondisclosure.

Our office has recently received funding from two sources to help provide targeted civil legal services to our low-income communities. The first grant is geared toward helping persons impacted by opioid use disorder; we are engaged in outreach to local drug rehabilitation and treatment centers to help address these needs. The second grant, from Abilene United Way, helps homeowners clear titles to their homes, opening up opportunities to receive state-provided exemptions to help lower property taxes and low-interest loans to make needed repairs to their homes. Under the grant, our staff provide legal advice, representation, and document preparation for low-income residents to preserve their property rights.

In addition to our branch office, we have a Legal Aid Pro Se Assistance (LAPSA) office that is located close to the Taylor County Courthouse in space provided by the county. Our LAPSA office provides limited services to pro se litigants to help them navigate the court system; the program enjoys support from local courts, clerks, and other county offices, which refer these litigants to our office. The LAPSA attorney helps litigants by reviewing court pleadings and orders to ensure that they comply with state law and local rules. Our office is open to the public Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
