Working at Legal Aid of NorthWest Texas
We believe that access to justice should be a level playing field, regardless of income or ability to hire a private attorney. We are looking for like-minded attorneys, paralegals, social workers, and support staff to join our mission of ensuring equal access to justice by providing free legal representation and advocacy to low-income individuals, families, and groups across the diverse 114 counties we serve.
Our Vision
Ensure low-income Texas residents and impoverished communities have the ability to effectively assert their rights, achieve protection under the law, and meaningfully access the civil legal justice system.
Our Mission
Legal Aid of NorthWest Texas will ensure equal access to justice and improve the lives of low-income communities by providing high-quality legal representation, strategic litigation, valuable legal advice, and meaningful collaborations, outreach, and community education.
Why I Serve with Legal Aid of NorthWest Texas: Employee Spotlight
Tamara Duncan 2023When Tamara Duncan was a first-year law student at Texas Tech University School of Law, she volunteered at a Legal Aid clinic because she believed that it was a good thing to do. Fast forward 20+ years, and Tamara is still doing good things for Legal Aid of NorthWest Texas, but now as a manager who mentors new attorneys as well as law students attending her alma mater. Despite her managerial duties, Tamara still takes cases for representation, including several eviction cases that flooded her office as many pandemic protections and programs have ended. “I continue to handle cases because I believe it’s important work,” she says. “It’s rewarding to stand in the gap between the client and the legal process, and knowing that if it wasn’t for you, the person’s outcome would likely have been very different.”

Ongoing Training
Before starting their employment, new staff members are introduced to Legal Aid of NorthWest Texas during a one-day orientation session. They also receive hands-on support from their supervising manager and training on the systems and software that LANWT uses on a daily basis. New employees are invited to attend onboarding training that covers both substantive law issues and basic policy and procedure requirements that LANWT staff must follow.
Throughout their employment, LANWT staff are encouraged to continue growing in their field by attending workshops, seminars, and conferences that relate to their practice of law. We also support continuing education needs and requirements through in-house training opportunities.
