Disaster Legal Services Unit (DLSU)

Program Overview

Established in 2022 with a disaster grant from the Legal Services Corporation (LSC), the Disaster Legal Services Unit (DLSU) offers education and free legal services to low-income individuals affected by a disaster. Our staff conducts outreach to educate the community about common legal issues after a disaster, and the services LANWT provides to help resolve them.

We coordinate with local LANWT offices in responding to disasters to ensure that those impacted by a disaster receive the help they need in a timely manner. The DLSU acquired and distributed Technology Go-Packs throughout our service area to enable staff to respond to a disaster quickly and provide legal services, even in areas where there is a lack of cell service or local power outages. The DLSU provides disaster preparedness education, advises people of their rights and services available after a disaster, and provides legal services in the many legal issues that arise after a disaster.

The DLSU can help eligible individuals with:

  • FEMA/SBA applications and appeals
  • Clearing title to real property
  • Landlord/tenant issues
  • Replacing lost documents
  • Home repair contracts
  • Disaster unemployment benefits
  • Insurance claims
